Last Saturday SHE might have turned the big 4-0 this year, but Sandy Lam sure knows how to put on an electrifying performance to get her mid-lifer fans up on their feet.

Last Saturday, greying fans were among the 7,500-strong crowd that sang and boogied at the Hong Kong singer’s last stop of her world tour – her first in four years. Fans, waving a sea of glow-sticks, began to chant ‘san-dee’ as soon as the lights dimmed.

The pint-sized vocalist rewarded the adulation with three hours of pitch-perfect renditions of hits like Not At Home, Scar and At Least There Was You. Kicking off the show with fast tracks like On The Strength and Burn, she displayed the finesse – and figure – of performers half her age through deft dance moves and powerful vocals.

She also sported a rocker chick get-up to set the tone for some songs, complete with a spiky faux mohawk styled by her long-time hair stylist Kim Robinson, black nail polish and a leather motorcycle glove worn on one hand. Her 1990s ballad Not At Home, for one, was given a hard-rock power anthem treatment which took the edge off the mournful undertones of the original track.

But it was the slower tracks that showed off her lush vocals which, as a fan was overhead saying, sounded like they came from a studio recording rather than a live performance. And if Lam was exhausted from the four-month-long world tour – which included stops in Beijing, Shanghai, Taipei, Kuala Lumpur and Lake Tahoe in the United States – the fresh-faced singer and former spokesman for cosmetics brand SK-II certainly never showed it.

She gamely bantered with the audience in a mix of fluent English, Mandarin and Cantonese, winning them over with politically correct comments like ‘coming to Singapore always feels like returning to my second home’. She has collaborated with home-grown musicians like Dick Lee on previous albums and visited Singapore on several occasions.

She even performed a ‘diva medley’, essentially a collection of her dance hits such as a Mandarin version of trance anthem Rapture and delivered a rich aria embedded in a tango-inspired song titled Fragrance Of Rose.

The night ended with an encore of crowd favourites like Scar and Paper Plane, which was topped off by another medley, this time of English pop tunes like I Swear by All-4-One and Are You Ready For Love by Elton John. For that one night, many were happy to be Not At Home so as to soak in a heavenly performance by one of Chinese pop’s best-loved divas.

By the looks of things on Saturday night, Sandy Lam conquered her audience – all 7,500 of them. Filled to 90 per cent capacity, the Indoor Stadium was abuzz – even before the concert began – with the feverish drone of fans wondering what herng song would be and which hits from her 22-year career she would include in her set list.

The moment she appeared – in a bejeweled sleeveless top, distressed jeans and military boots to the thumping beats of her Cantonese hit Keng Cheh – everyone, whether they were 16 or 60, was enraptured.

Be it an old hit like Ai Shang Yi Ge Bu Hui Jia De Ren or Shang Hen, or a new offering from her latest release, Breathe Me, all 25 numbers and five encore pieces were greeted with thunderous applause and wolf whistles.

Not surprisingly, Lam’s Diva Medley – which included Tin Dai Dei Dai and her latest hit, a Mandarin take on New Order’s Bizarre Love Triangle – got fans donning shimmery wigs and gyrating in wild abandon.

Looking hardly a day over 25, the petite elfin chanteuse – who turned 40 this year – proved her resilience as a mainstay in the Chinese music industry by displaying her vocal prowess in novel arrangements of her older repertoire and the soaring melodies of newer songs.

With seven energetic dancers, an outstanding seven-piece band and three backup singers to accompany her, Lam played it simple with chic costumes, sleek choreography and no gimmicks.

Clearly, two things were at the forefront of this concert: The music and that voice. Pitch perfect and crystal clear, Lam never faltered during her two-and-a-half-hour concert, vacillating effortlessly between coy whisper and mighty belt.

She even exercised her impressive soprano register for a musical interlude during Mei Gui Xiang, hitting a note Mariah Carey would approve of.

Clearly delighted to be back in Singapore, Lam chatted with the throng in Mandarin, Cantonese and English, saying at one point nostalgically: “Singapore is a special place. It almost feels like coming home in a way. It’s wonderful to be back.”

And it was evident – from the persistent howls of “Encore! Encore!” long after the house lights came on – how much the crowd wished she didn’t have to go.
