I’m not exactly a fan fan of hers. I don’t even know her Cantopop stuff and half the Mandopop songs she sang when I was much younger. But there’s no way to ignore her stage presence and have your butt firmly planted on the seat- unless you really really have to pee , of course- while she effortlessly hits all the high notes. Basically, you just shut up, sit, watch and listen. My friends and family would know that something or someone incredible is needed to make me sit still.
I watched her collect an award at the Singapore Hit Awards a few days before my 16th birthday, her mini concert with Qi Yu at the now defunct Harbour Pavilion the night before I collected my ‘O’s results, and numerous showcases and concerts over the years. I went home each and every time thinking she is the stuff of what legends are made of.
I must say you guys who mentioned her voice was very soft…. YOU ARE ALL SO SO SO WRONG! She has got powerful voice! I was so impressed thru out the whole concert! I mean I never expect Sandy Lam to have such a steady and powerful voice, no off key at all!! I know singers should not sing off key and stuff but for the fact that she sang in soprano (was super duper impressive!), with alot of cantonese and chinese fast songs with dances so that was amazing!
Her voice thru out the concert was crystal clear.. I was so immersed in her songs, and more on those that I love… the last few adhoc songs were English ones and she was so good in them… especially the last one she sang “Almost Over You”.. can cut English album already – no joke! Make me feel so in love with the song again… hehe… and FYI she speaks really good English…
One of the funny moments of the show is when Sandy’s concert producer came out and told the audience that the night before, Sandy sneaked into his hotel room and confiscated all his underwears! So during the concert, he “punished” her by making her sing a 15-mins non-stop medley, which she handled well! Again, it showed her 实力.
Age is just a number .. yes .. even when you are 40 .. Just look at Sandy Lam. I’m such a fan now … and for the record … even recorded albums do not do her justice. Only live performances do her justice.
At 40, she was still looking pretty young, like not a day past 30, and she certainly has taken very good care of herself. She was still doing pretty radical dance moves, being warm and friendly, it was a no wonder her fan base was so strong.
