Thoughts:
This is my first CD I ever bought in my life. And to be very honest, this is my first album I ever bought from Sandy. There were just too many reasons why, perhaps I will have to skip that part. I don’t know how many people got freaked out since this album, but I am one of the audiences who got in closer with Sandy. Many of my friends were telling me how boring this album was, and kept asking me why weren’t there any up-beat songs? Some said they didn’t understand the lyrics… and so much more.
I remember reading those entertainment pages in newspapers, they were all saying Sandy’s music got so heavy this time, and I believe that was the first time people started saying her music is not commercial enough. So that was the time Jacky Cheung, Leon Lai, Andy Lau and Aaron Kwok were ruling the charts, the industry has changed since then. I guess this album was born at the wrong time, in the wrong place. What if it is released 10 years after? Well, the outcome might be different or worst. Who knows.
I can’t pick my favorite in this album, because one song links to another. What I like about this album is that although it’s a concept album on the “wildflower” topic, but that doesn’t mean every single song has to relate to flower, yet all these pieces have captured the mood. The music itself although remain in the Chinese pop structure, but some of the arrangement has pushed the music further to a higher level in which the Chinese music scene couldn’t catch up till today. The use of Chinese instruments and Jazz influences have enriched the entire album, along with Sandy’s superb vocal, poetic writings in the booklet, and artistic arts on the cover, this album is legendary.
This is Sandy’s all-time-classic with no doubt, like the Chinese saying – “it can only be done once in a lifetime.” Sandy has perfected the music style of East meets West, thank you to all the writers in this album, they made the impossible, possible.
